CONSTRUCTION SITE IN LONDON

THE CHALLENGE
A construction site in London was facing practical and political obstacles for works to be carried out on a busy main shopping street. Shop owners and local residents would be going about their regular business and so it was necessary to create the least disruption possible. Running a diesel generator would be necessary to provide power to site but the noise and pollution emissions, as well as the disruption of refuelling would be unacceptable.
The site required power for welfare facilities during the busy daytime but power needs at night were reduced to maintain essential loads. The site power needs extend to the supply of two offices modules, one drying room, one canteen, and two toilet blocks. Heating, lighting and general office loads together with welfare, catering and water pumps consume energy as well as power tools and equipment required for the work itself.
THE SOLUTION
The solution installed featured a 30kVa gridtogo™ unit linked to a 60kVA diesel generator. This allows for the unit to be recharged by the generator in the day, whilst the generator also powers the site needs. Once the site has closed for the working day, and during the weekends, the battery storage unit powers the load without the noise and emissions that would have been created by the generator.

BENEFITS
FUEL SAVINGS
The hybrid power system created improvements in generator fuel efficiency that resulted in fuel consumption savings of 609L each week. At a cost of 66p per litre for diesel, cost savings of £402 per week were achieved.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Employing the gridtogo™ meant being not only able to reduce dependence upon the generator but enabled the site to have 24/7 power with the least possible environmental impact. The hybrid solution also eliminated any political problems as it met Section 61’s environmental regulations if mains power is not an option.
REDUCED MAINTENANCE COST
As our solution lessened the responsibility of the generator there was an additional monetary benefit as maintenance costs were minimised.
NOISE ELIMINATION
Overall, the site works did not hinder the normal running of the business as power could be delivered to the site 24/7, with little noise pollution.

CUSTOMER TESTIMONIAL
“We’d never used a hybrid site power set up before and very happy with the solution and it has enabled us to adhere to our compliance regulations of not running our generator after 19:00 Monday to Friday, Saturday after 18:00 & Sunday after 17:00. I would definitely use a hybrid set up again on future projects that don’t have a mains power supply.”
